Institute for Human Development

The Institute for Human Development is dedicated to promoting full inclusion by advancing attitudes that value persons with disabilities while enhancing access to all aspects of the human experience.

Our work impacts people at all life stages – individually and socially. IHD facilitates research and programming to inform change that positively impacts individuals with disabilities.

When you give to NAU and IHD this Giving Day, you contribute to something greater than yourself. With your support, we are able to help enrich the education of students at NAU in many ways:

  • provide financial assistance to deserving students
  • maintain student-centered learning environments that challenge young minds
  • conduct meaningful research
  • attract and retain high-quality faculty

Institute for Human Development Discretionary Fund

Donations to the IHD Discretionary Fund support two very important programs:

The Minor in Disability Studies

The Minor in Disability Studies program is housed within the Institute for Human Development (IHD) at Northern Arizona University. Disability studies is an interdisciplinary field that examines disability through a social, cultural, and political lens. Students gain insight into how existing systems both support and limit people with disabilities—and, importantly, how they can become more effective advocates for disability rights and inclusion.

Your generous contribution will help offset the cost of required books and materials for students in the Minor in Disability Studies program. Additionally, funds may be used to support student attendance at disability-related conferences and events that deepen their understanding of key topics in the field.

IHD Mobile Clinic

Early Childhood professionals from IHD provide vital services to children ages birth to 8 throughout Northern Arizona and the Navajo Nation. The services include an interdisciplinary developmental evaluation mobile clinic. IHD staff and students from departments such as Communication Sciences and Disorders, Occupational therapy, Combined Counseling/School Psychology, and Social Work collaborate to serve families in rural areas of the Navajo Nation through the mobile clinic. The students have the unique opportunity to learn relevant observation and evaluation skills using an interdisciplinary approach used to evaluate and diagnose developmental disabilities.

Your generous contribution will help offset the cost of student’s participation.  This will include travel costs associated with participating in the mobile clinic (e.g., lodging & meals).
