Women's & Gender Studies

WGS is a program in which you will examine identities, including gender, class, race, sexuality, nationality, citizenship status, and disability. These identities are contextualized within institutional systems and on a global scale. You will learn how these identities and systems were constructed, how they affect people, and how change occurs.

With small classes, dedicated faculty, internship opportunities, and an interdisciplinary class selection, students in the WGS program can expect personal attention and opportunities to incorporate their own topics of interest. Classes often include in-depth discussions, activism projects, art creation, literature, media, practical applications, and societal engagement.

WGS graduates have gone on to use their skills in a variety of areas, including work within non-profit careers, domestic violence shelters, sexual assault prevention education, LGBTQIA centers, indigenous rights organizations, art and media, healthcare, politics, law, business, and more.

Identities and institutions permeate every aspect of society, and knowledge about them will be relevant to any area you go into. A WGS degree can easily be combined with any other degree, fulfilling liberal arts requirements while also attaining a deeper theoretical analysis of society.

This Giving Day, we invite you to elevate what’s possible for our students by supporting key funds that make a lasting difference:

The Janet K Schnorr Memorial Scholarship

This is a Memorial Scholarship that is designed for our WGS majors.  Students use this scholarship to extend their research projects and complete their degree requirements.  Some of our top WGS majors who have outstanding academic credentials along with a deep commitment to issues of social justice have been the past recipients of this memorial scholarship. In contributing to this scholarship, you would ensure our students uphold the highest principles of our interdisciplinary field of study to enrich their future careers as well as foster shared values of belonging within their communities.

Women’s Studies Program Scholarship

This is a scholarship fund that allows us the flexibility to draw upon the monies to support many teaching and learning initiatives alongside community building programming within WGS. In contributing to this scholarship, you would enable our program to continue to bring outstanding and timely opportunities for the campus and our wider Flagstaff community to engage and learn from our robust programmatic offerings over the course of the academic year.
