The Lumberjack
Make a gift to support NAU's student journalists, photographers and designers!

The Lumberjack has been the student voice of Northern Arizona University since it was founded in 1914. Today, The Lumberjack is a 24/7 news operation staffed entirely by students who contribute to all aspects of the publication’s workflow.

The Lumberjack’s website provides a platform for breaking news, updates on previous stories, multimedia projects and digital journalism, while the our social media team constantly engages with readers.

Why we need your support

Along with publishing daily on JackCentral.orgThe Lumberjack works to produce a high-quality magazine issue each semester. We distribute these print editions to newsstands all over the NAU campus and at off-campus locations around Flagstaff. Funds from this campaign will go toward the printing costs needed to distribute copies of this issue to our readers

Why a magazine?

The Lumberjack stopped printing its weekly editions when COVID-19 hit in the Spring 2020 semester. Since then, our content has taken many forms. From publishing digital weekly issues to printing a few special issue newspapers, we eventually moved the majority of our content online. With the ways readers consume media rapidly changing, we adapted our daily content distribution methods to align with industry standards.

However, we recognize our readers still want to connect with print media. In Spring 2024, we decided to upgrade our print product to a high-quality magazine, which allowed for a more creative format to tell stories. Our staff has been able to branch into more visual-focused storytelling and learn new methods of creating story packages. The Lumberjack now produces one magazine issue a semester, with students handling each part of its production — from reporting, photographing, designing, editing, managing advertiser contracts and marketing the magazine.

Your Impact

Your contribution to this magazine would greatly benefit our team of students and the experience they receive producing a print product they are proud of. We work to ensure our magazine issues cover topics important to our community; with your help, we can place copies in the hands of our readers. Thank you again for your endless support, and we hope you can pick up a copy of our magazine soon!
