Elevate First Generation Programs

Help First-Generation Lumberjacks Pursue Their Purpose

Every student arrives at NAU with a dream—but for first-generation students, the journey to achieving that dream often comes with additional barriers. From navigating college systems without a family roadmap to balancing financial pressures and self-doubt, these students face challenges that extend far beyond the classroom.

Your gift helps first-generation, low-income Lumberjacks access the guidance, resources, and community they need to persist and succeed. With intentional, high-touch support, students gain confidence, build belonging, and create futures filled with purpose and possibility.

Our Giving Day Priorities

Make an impact that expands access, opportunity, and support for first-generation students with a gift to:

Student Transition and Retention Program (STAR)

STAR provides a powerful foundation for first-generation, low-income students through its 4-week Summer Bridge program—an experience that would otherwise cost students approximately $5,000 out of pocket. Scholarships make this opportunity accessible by covering room, board, and six credit hours, ensuring students can begin their NAU journey without financial burden.

More than a summer program, STAR creates a lasting network of care that supports students from their first days on campus through graduation. The program is intentionally designed to foster a strong sense of belonging, enhance academic success and retention, provide early and ongoing access to campus resources, and challenge and develop students through mentoring, programming, and community-building experiences.

Currently, STAR is only able to serve about 100 students each year. With additional support, the program can expand its reach and provide this life-changing experience to more Arizona students who need it most.

First Generation Opportunity (FGO) Fund

The First Generation Opportunity Fund (FGO) supports first-generation students in accessing meaningful, out-of-classroom educational experiences. These experiences can include internships, professional development, research, and other high-impact learning opportunities that shape students’ futures.

Your support on NAU Giving Day will significantly increase our ability to provide transformative opportunities that enhance student success, confidence, and career readiness.

Blavin Bettin Scholars Program

The Blavin Bettin Scholars Program at NAU was established to support youth who have experienced foster care and dream of achieving a college education.

Through comprehensive individual and program support, this program helps students navigate and maximize their college experience as they pursue a bachelor’s degree at NAU.

Financial emergencies are often unforeseen. When you give to this area of impact, you will help a Blavin Bettin Scholar navigate life's unexpected challenges. This emergency fund helps cover costs like childcare expenses, LSAT prep, counseling services, medical expenses, and much more.
