Elevate First Year Seminar

Support First Year Seminar (FYS) on Giving Day

Every college graduate was once a first-year student. These students become graduates because they have a decent first-year. Funding the first-year is funding the foundations of the entire enterprise.

Help Us Re-Invest in a Common Reads Program

Currently, FYS can serve only about 2000 students each year. A Common Reads program, something we once had at NAU but is now defunct, could extend FYS's reach to a broader swatch of the NAU first-year cohort.

Support the First Year Seminar with a gift to the College of Education Fund today. Together, a collective $10,000 raised on Giving Day will support a strong Common Reads Program, allow us to serve additional first year students, and maybe even create opportunities for our Common Reads author to come to campus.

How FYS Shaped One Student's Journey

Director of and Teaching Professor in First Year Experience, Cody Canning recounts how FYS shaped one student's NAU experience:

For one student, FYS was a gateway opportunity that changed her college career. First-generation and low-income, [this student (we'll call her "L")] joined FYS in the fall of 2023—shy and uncertain about her future. The welcoming environment created by the class and the faculty member allowed her to find her footing and shine.

Through building connections with FYS faculty, L found her way into working for the Teaching and Learning Center, serving as a student advocate on the Psychological Sciences curriculum committee, and engaging in Hispanic/Latine facing student success initiatives. And now, she's graduating a year earlier. L Would have always done well, by the start provided her by FYS is an unquestionable foundation for her momentum and growth."
