¡MIRA! is nationally unique with over 50% URM and female faculty, allowing diverse students to see themselves reflected in their mentors.  We provide an opportunity to train diverse students in the emerging field of materials science, which according to industry analysts may be the most important technology of the next decade.  By vastly accelerating our ability to create advanced materials to power industries from energy to medicine to manufacturing, revolutionary materials research has already had a significant impact- from saving the environment to bringing renewable energy technologies to market, to creating materials for new bone and cartilage implants- and there’s no limit to what we can achieve in the future.

Advocating Accountability and Ethics for Big Tech: An Evening with Facebook Whistleblower Frances Haugen The NAU Honors Distinguished Speaker Series showcases inspired thinkers from all disciplines addressing issues of vital community interest. The presentations will engage and enlighten students and community members about critical issues facing the region, the nation, and the world. During her time at Facebook as the lead Product Manager on the Civic Misinformation team, Frances became increasingly alarmed by the choices the company makes prioritizing their own profits over public safety and putting people's lives at risk.
